An Elephant on Ninth Avenue
A tropical Thai jungle in the middle of Manhattan: carved arches, rattan light and a kitchen devoted to traditional flavor.
From Bangkok Flavors to Ninth Avenue
Since its inception in 2018 in Bangkok, Elephant Ear has become known for its exquisite take on classic Thai dishes: authentic curries, flavorful noodle bowls and an extensive selection of seafood.
Its commitment to authenticity and freshness has made it one of the top destinations for Thai cuisine enthusiasts in the area. In November 2024, Elephant Ear opened its New York dining room at 690 Ninth Avenue, between West 47th and 48th Street, in the heart of Hell's Kitchen.
The address has deep Thai roots: it was once home to the popular Thai eatery Room Service. Business partners Lay Liang and Patrick Li, who had worked in the same space before, took it back and transformed it in under two months of non-stop, day-and-night work, as the neighborhood news site W42ST reported when we opened.
The result is a restaurant devoted to the bold, herbal spices of Northern Thailand alongside the beloved classics of Bangkok, served in a room that feels like a Thai jungle.
Why "Elephant Ear"?
The elephant (ช้าง, chang) is the national animal of Thailand and a symbol of strength, wisdom, loyalty and good fortune.
For centuries elephants carried kings into battle, hauled teak through northern forests and appeared in temple carvings and royal emblems. The white elephant was the most auspicious of all, a sign of a righteous reign. Our hand-drawn elephant emblem watches over the dining room.
Our dining room's elephant-inspired decor, carvings and tapestries honor that history, bringing a little of Thailand's spirit to Manhattan.
A Room That Transports You
The walls are decorated with vibrant traditional Thai tapestries and artworks, creating a unique visual appeal. The entrance is adorned with intricate Thai carvings, inviting you into a tropical Thai jungle atmosphere.
A gentle aroma, bamboo decor and soft traditional Thai music add to the immersive experience, making it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy dinner with family and friends. Walking into our restaurant is like going back in time. Indulge yourself with Thai hospitality and the culinary wonders of traditional Thailand.
